The Addictions Institute San Francisco launched in 2019 as a continuation of The Addictions Institute in Menlo Park, California, which was founded in 1989 on the research and theories of Dr. Stephanie Brown. It has been a long-time leader locally and nationwide in the field of addiction treatment and recovery.
The Addictions Institute San Francisco offers a full range of psychotherapy services to anyone seeking help with their own or someone else’s addiction, substance use, compulsive behaviors or recovery process. We are a team of deeply committed, knowledgeable and trusted senior-level clinicians with expertise in addiction, trauma and recovery. We practice in San Francisco, the Bay Area and throughout California. We integrate a developmental perspective with various psychotherapy approaches to offer the highest quality treatment and help.

ASSOCIATES
Jennifer Roether LCSW: With over 15 years in the field, Jenny brings robust knowledge and experience in co-occurring addiction treatment from residential to outpatient care to AISF. Using trauma informed practices, Jenny’s draws from motivational interviewing, internal family systems, long-term developmental repair, experiential practices and narrative-based therapies. Jenny specializes in working with licensed professionals, executives, their partners and loved ones.
Andrea Throndson LMFT: Andrea specializes in addiction, trauma and grief with vast experience from the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford University and Kara Grief Support to Camden Center and Abilities United. She integrates the work of Dr. Stephanie Brown and her Developmental Model of Addiction and Recovery with psychodynamic, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral, attachment, neuroscience and trauma informed practices. Andrea is a certified DBT therapist and works with a variety of clients including executives, families, young adults and transgender individuals.
Sarah Rubin LMFT: Sarah has over 20 years of experience providing psychotherapy in the Bay Area. She is an expert in the field of addictions treatment, eating disorders and anxiety management. Through psychotherapy, art therapy, coaching and equine assisted therapy, Sarah tailors her work to meet each client’s unique needs. She draws upon her professional wisdom, evidence-based practices and out of the box thinking when collaborating with clients. Sarah pays close attention to patterns and boundaries with clients and supports them in exploring, understanding and transforming their lives and themselves. Sarah has extensive experience helping teens, young adults, families, parents, and couples.
